There is a saying that “Those that can’t do teach other to do.”
The sad fact is that this saying is often applied to the teaching of any acting process, including auditioning. If you are taking an upper education course about acting/auditioning at a local university, there is a good chance that the teacher has not been on a set or in a casting session for years and they are not current on trends, SAG rules and technology. We are all familiar with the high cost of college courses.
Every region has acting classes, too, and some are terrific. I have experienced dozens of these classes, and as I said, some can not be topped. If you ever have a chance to study with Glenn Morshower in any of his regional workshops, I can not begin to tell you how much value you will get from it. But most classes are not taught by the ‘Moshowers’ of the world, and are often taught by actors who need to supplement their acting income, so they teach. I have witnessed poor teaching and inaccurate teaching and I can even say, teaching that could do more harm than good. These classes will also cost a substantial amount, without having access to good material over and over again as a refresher.
With that in mind, you need to train. I think that you would agree with me that a pianist will need to work on his craft for years before thinking of playing Carnegie Hall.
If you never train, how will you never correct some simple mistakes that you make in auditions. So you can waste gas, time and energy going to auditions year after year, making the same mistakes, or you can invest in taking a course that will greatly increase your chances of booking.
Remember to talk to a CPA as well, as there is a very good chance that anything you spend on advancing your career as an actor is a tax write off.
What are Catrine McGregor’s qualifications to teach this course?
Catrine McGregor holds a dual Master’s Degree in Filmmaking and Education from Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles, and has cast and produced over 400 film, TV, commercial, IMAX and video game projects. She has won awards in each creative field, has taught hundreds of auditioning workshops, and is a member of the prestigious Casting Society of America.
Do I need to be in Hollywood to benefit from this course?
Absolutely not! If, in fact, you live in LA, you probably have an acting class or school on every corner (right next to the Starbuck’s, most likely!). Even these classes probably don’t go into the in-depth detail of the ReelGuru Auditioning class, and the on-line course doesn’t require a 45 minute drive and finding a $20 parking space!
Every part of the world needs actors for some reason or another, and you, the regional actor, need the training that ReelGuru can provide you. The information will not vary from area to area.
